Nieuport 17, late version, 1:32, Copper State Models
Dear all,
since I hearded about CSM's plans to release a Nieuport 17 for the first time, I could hardly wait to get one. I love the Nieuport biplanes and although the venerable Hobbycraft kit surely was a good one in its times, these times are long gone.
When Edgar asked me if I would build one and put it onto a base like I did with my Special Hobby Nieuport 11, of course I agreed immediately. So I was honored with a free example of this formidable new kit which is phraised all over the internet. I am very grateful to Edgar for this honor and could hardly wait starting the kit since I received it. But an annoying cold kept me off the work bench for two weeks and forced me to consume more tea than I ever had before intented to drink in my whole lifetime.
My intention is to build this kit completely out of the box, and it is a great coincidence that after browsing through the parts and the instructions there remainded nothing in my eyes which would have to be added anyway. All you need is in the box
Meanwhile I went through my library (which is a pure euphemism for my messy shelves) and picked out the most important literature on the Nieuport 17.
The good thing being ill was that I had plenty of time to choose a color sheme, which is always a pain for me. This very case doesn't ease the pain as there are countless striking color schemes for the Nieuport 17 and the kit alone gives four decal options. I tend to avoid kit's decals, in most cases simply because I want to do a certain scheme that is no part of any decal sheet, but in this case here I will go with the kit's decals. The choosen options look too good and are obviously too well researched. My choice fell on André René Celestin Herbelins Nieuport 17 from Escadrille N102 in late 1916 or early 1917. The serial is unknown, but the walking Death and the words "risque tout" gives it its own morbid beauty. And there is another reason for this color scheme. The only original picture I could find of this machine showed it obviously with removed engine covers which makes it possible to show more of the greatly detailed interior of this kit.
I am eagerly waiting for some modelling time in the next days.
Best regards
Andreas

Hello Borsos,
Would you like to make us a kit review of this model?
CSM seems to be a new company in modeling world. Is it possible to make a comparison with WNW kits and Roden kits(to stay in the same scale)?
Have fun with this model!
I'm waiting for the next steps....

Hello again (finally),
A review of the Copper State Kit meanwhile can be found here: https://1914.forumactif.com/t34-nieuport-17-1-32-copper-state-models-les-pochoirs
sorry for having let you wait for so long, but it took me a while until I had some parts in my hands that looked worth taking a picture of and posting it here. I followed the instructions and cleaned up all the tiny interior parts that I glued together in subassemblies that would ease painting. I used my usual Gunze and Tamiya colors for the spray paint job and my Spanish Acrylics for brush painting. For the wood grain I used acrylics this time to fasten the drying time.
I still have serious troubles with my photo hosting page as they suddenly fail to show up propper links to embed photos on forums. Therefore I had entirely to stop posting here and I have to excuse for any distorted pictures here. As soon as time allows I will fix that and seek for another picture hosting page that works fine.
Thanks to Xan who gave me the idea to copy the image adresses from Des Delatorres WW1aviation forum where posting pictures still worked and try to post them here. Obvously it is working somehow...
As this is going to be an OOB build for the German internet magazine „kitchecker“ that I am writing for from time to time, I did not add any parts to the cockpit that are not in the box besides of the rigging material. As usual I use flexible stuff here for the interior due to the fragility of the small parts. The fit of the interior is fantastic and I didn’t have any fitting problems until now. And although the cockpit is a very busy place there is no problem with interfering parts when you follow exactly the instructions.
best regards
Andreas

Re: Nieuport 17, late version, 1:32, Copper State Models
I finished the interior besides some last touch ups with a thin brush here and there. After gluing the rear fuselage together, which consists of six parts that fit like a dream, this rear part is glued onto the back of the interior structure which is quite a unique parts breakdown for a fuselage. But it went together without any problems. Also the forward decking is no problem to try fit in neither had been the fit of the interior structure on the single lower wing part. here I had used a piece of Uschi van der Rostens wood grain decal for the floor. But the fit of the side panels is a little bit tricky and I spent some time to scratch down its thickness and also to reduce the upper main bars of the interior structure. i hope it fits also with glue after spraying the inside of these panels in a light ocre shade for the wood grain. Well, it starts to look like a Nieuport...

Re: Nieuport 17, late version, 1:32, Copper State Models
Merci beaucoup a toutes!
I painted the interior of the side panels and the forward fuselage cover. On the edges I had to remove some material to make the panels fit the fuselage frame:
" />
Meanwhile I closed the fuselage. I used Vallejo putty for the first time to close some minor seams and it works really fine with a watered fingertip.
I also glued together some subassemblies. I dryfitted the fuselage and the engine cover. The fit is very good.
Best regards
Andreas

Re: Nieuport 17, late version, 1:32, Copper State Models
I’ve spent some hours in the paint shop.
For the enduit metalisee I used Gunze‘s silver with some drops of white. The wheel hubs and undercarriage receeived a shot of Vallejos white aluminium and the cowling is painted with chrome from the same brand.
Best regards

Bonsour
I found a new home for my pictures. After many troubles with my hosting site I received an Email that it is shutting down. Obviously I wasn’t the only one who had troubles. Now I try out a German hosting site called „Abload“. Works fine at the moment...
Meanwhile I added some shadowing with Gunze Smoke to the wings and fuselage. I didn’t accentuate the rib Tapes in this case as they are barely visible on original pics. Some shots of shiny clear and the decals will follow.

Borsos a écrit: I dryfitted the fuselage and the engine cover. The fit is very good.

Bonjour Andreas.

Merci beaucoup, Xan!
Oh yes, his SPAD looks awesome as well! One day I will tackle the Roden SPAD 7, which must be a difficult kit, like people say...
And now it’s a biplane. The rigging is one of the simplest and fastest of all WWI planes I think. Attaching the top wing went like a charm. It was the first time i installed all anchor points for the rigging before attaching the top wing, which was problemfree.

Some touch-ups here and there and some minor details are still missing like the windscreen or the upper wing Lewis and other things.
Best regards

Bravo Andreas!

Re: Nieuport 17, late version, 1:32, Copper State Models
Merci beaucoup, Xan. I will do this exactly like you did on my early version of the kit. But that late version had the different, flat windscreen between the cabane struts.
Hello dear fellow modellers,
Due to my recent changing from being a modeller to being a nurse my modelling time was cut extremely short. But things got better again and there’s some hours left to finish this one:
CSM‘s Nieuport is a lovely kit that makes aftermarket items completely superfluous in my opinion. I build it oob except from some fishing line for the rigging.
The mechanic standing on the wheel (great unique pose) is from the CSM range of resin figures. They are fantastically sculpted and flawlessly cast in dark grey resin. For bringing a little extra, I changed the heads for hornet heads and sculpted a bonnet de police 1916 style. His helper is a new Kellerkind figure. I changed the brush in his hand for a wrench.
The pilot, Monsieur Herbelin, is also a CSM offering. I changed his head as well for a hornet head where I added a flying helmet. The original head wears an officer‘s kepi, and I wanted my pilot getting ready immediately before taking off
I enjoyed this project from the beginning to the end and I am keen on any new CSM kits, especially the Nieuport 21....
